Description

Under Two Flags is the story of The Salvation Army of New Zealand in the First World War and fi lls an important gap in our knowledge of New Zealands response to that war. Written mostly by members of The Salvation Army, it covers the support the Army gave both at home in New Zealand and with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force overseas. The book includes the wars impact on the organisation in New Zealand, such as the constant drain of good bandsmen enlisted or conscripted for overseas service. As a former soldier, its most vivid chapters for me are those of the chaplains who were attached to the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. These men were dedicated, yet human, as is the Army in which they serve, but in their hearts intent on serving humanity. Under Two Flags shows that when it was needed, The Salvation Army was there, something which was recognised by New Zealanders at large in the years whichfollowed the war. It is a proud story of the Armys service to humanity in the war that was to end all wars.
