Myths and Legends of Aotearoa

Myths and Legends of Aotearoa - Annie Rae Te Ake Ake

ISBN / ISSN:
9781869433888

Shortlisted for the 2000 NZ Post Children's Book Awards, non-fiction section.

For the first time, fifteen ancient Maori stories are retold by gifted storyteller Annie Rae Te Ake Ake and illustrated by nineteen artists from New Zealand secondary schools.

Myths and Legends of Aotearoa aims to strengthen the awareness of the indigenous wisdom and spirit of New Zealand. It also heralds the creative work of Aotearoa's new generation of young artists and acknowledges the many cultures that are modern New Zealand.
Myths and Legends of Aotearoa is Annie Rae Te Ake Ake's first book and it came about through her love of storytelling. On request from her mokopuna, Annie made a home recording of some favourite legends on tape. Three volumes were later recorded in a studio, entitled The Boat Shed, and these were marketed to schools in New Zealand. School teachers then asked Annie for written copies of these ancient stories. Thus began the demanding task of transcribing the stories and the manuscript for Myths and Legends of Aotearoa was born. Now she is delighted to see her stories become a beautiful picture book with the help of many young, talented artists.
